Urban Cultivate offers an innovative consultancy service focused on transforming vacant urban spaces into vibrant, circular, and self-sustaining food-growing areas. We use cutting-edge approaches to map, analyse, connect, and optimise urban spaces, helping to inform land designation decisions and create a healthy, sustainable, and resilient food supply chain.
Our team has identified three major issues within urban food growing that need to be resolved: distribution, function,
and connectivity. Currently, food growing activities are concentrated on a limited number of sites, leading to overworked soil and limited accessibility and distribution of produce for local communities. Additionally, sites designated for urban
food growing tend to be used solely for cultivation, which means that other critical functions of the food supply chain cannot take place. Finally, many essential parts of the food supply chain are displaced to locations beyond the city, creating challenges around sustainability and waste reduction.
To address these challenges, we advocate for a new urban food growing system that identifies and connects under-utilised urban spaces into a cluster, with each space optimised to carry out a specific role in the food supply chain.
Our team is dedicated to creating a holistic and integrated approach to urban agriculture, working with communities, businesses, and local authorities to build a healthier, more resilient, and sustainable food system.
